Using the NERVES Socio-Economic Survey to Revamp Compensation Adler
Donna Bailer, JD, LLM, Department of Neurosurgery, University of Alabama at Birmingham "UAB"
Kirsten Yelvington, MSHM, Department of Neurosurgery, University of Alabama at Birmingham "UAB"

Using the NEVES Socio-Economic Survey, the Department of Neurosurgery at UAB revamped its physician compensation plans for its adult MDs, pediatric neurosurgery MDs, Neurointerventional Radiologist and Neurologist. Previously the department used AAMC benchmarks for salary and Vizient benchmarks for wRVUs. The session will step through the directives of the institution for new compensation plan requirements, the approach and goals of the new plan for the department, issues related to academic data and rank from the survey, as well as extrapolation of data points into a chart by 5 percentile increments. Variable pay percentage and factors will also be discussed as well as the treatment of a chair’s pool, call pay, and administrative stipends. At the conclusion, participants should be better prepared to address decision points they may face as they develop a compensation plan using NERVES survey data.
