June 2021 Newsletter President's Letter

President’s Letter for NERVES Newsletter - July 2021

Dear NERVES members:

I hope that everyone is doing well and beginning to emerge from the last few months!   I said in my last letter that although we have faced some extenuating circumstances, I believe we are emerging more resourceful than we were before.

In just a few short weeks, we will have our first in-person NERVES meeting in Orlando, and I can’t wait!  A lot has happened over the last couple of months, and I will highlight a few of the things we’ve done:

  • Our financials remain steady, and we are in a solid position going forward.  Although we unfortunately did not get to have our regular Annual Meeting last year, we were able to cancel/reschedule most of the meeting fees without penalty.  So far, we have several sponsors lined up for our annual meeting which will benefit us.
  • Our Education Committee has a lot of energy behind it.  They have been developing several virtual educational presentations for our members which have been particularly important during a time when we have had very limited opportunities to interact and network as we have in the past.  They have been working on monthly webinars based on topics that are important to our members. By the end of the year, NERVES will have offered 6 virtual seminars which have also been recorded for those who couldn’t attend the live presentation.
  • We are in the final stages of planning the next Annual Meeting which is currently scheduled to be held in Orlando. We have some excellent speakers and breakout sessions planned for our meeting.  You really don’t want to miss this event!
  • I think it’s important to recap and keep in front of everyone
    • Increasing and maintaining overall membership so that at least 67% of neurosurgery practices are represented.  We plan to accomplish this by staying in contact and engaging all members through virtual meetings and educational sessions.  There is opportunity for everyone….if you are interested in getting involved, just let us know.
    • Developing a pipeline of organizational leadership for the future and beginning to engage members in meaningful ways.  We plan to accomplish this by reaching out to active committee members to engage them at a higher level.
    • Growing sponsorships so that we can continue to fund the activities and speakers that will increase the value of our annual meeting to all attendees. We plan to accomplish this by potentially allowing sponsors to offer virtual events throughout the year and engaging them outside of the annual meeting in other ways.
    • Increasing our value and relationship with organized neurosurgery.  We plan to accomplish this by working with an outside group of advisory members who will be part of our long-range planning and strategy efforts. We will be asking them to assist with vision and mission and to ensure that we are operating in a way that increases our value to everyone. We are also working with the AANS team as we continue to build up our partnership with them.

I am extremely pleased with the volunteer board leadership for this upcoming year, and I appreciate everyone’s willingness to serve.  If you are interested in getting involved in a NERVES committee, we would love to talk to you.  You may confidentially contact Melissa Klingberg at [email protected].

Thank you for being a part of NERVES!

John Lewis, President
