NERVES Committee Reports

In an effort to keep our membership informed of the activities and health of the association, we are posting our most recent collection of NERVES committee reports. In this issue you will find the Annual Meeting Committee report and the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies report.

Annual Meeting Committee Report

By John Moeller, Annual Meeting Committee Co-chair

Co-chairs: John Moeller & Kevin Hockenson. Members: Donna Bailer, Mary Amann, Jacob Rodman, John Lewis, Steve Napolitan, Thomas Cairo, Jon Nguyen, Kirsten Yelvington, Ellyce Patton, Amanda Snyder, Carm Gizzi, Marisah Daniels.

The Annual Meeting Committee has been hard at work planning all the details of the upcoming NERVES Annual Meeting in Marina del Rey, CA, occurring April 19-21, 2023. With the help of our platinum sponsors Curi and Hub, we secured some really amazing featured speakers this year, along with our incredible group of regular presenters.

For those able to attend last year's meeting post-Covid, it was very obvious that we had all missed the in-person meeting format. Zoom is convenient, but it is simply no substitute to the hugs and laughs at a real NERVES meeting. We are hopeful that every member can make it to this year’s meeting. The roundtables on Wednesday are a “must attend” for every member, as this is where professional relationships are built with peers. If you are a new member, there is a cocktail reception, just for you, followed by a reception with all your new NERVES friends. Thursday and Friday are filled with vendor-sponsors, educational speakers, breakout sessions and colleagues to commiserate with you and support you.

We have secured a great selection of vendors, a great hotel location, and a lovely setting for breaks outdoors with friends. We also brought forth some ideas folks enjoyed at last fall’s NERVES Spine Conference held in Chicago by having the vendor booths in the main conference room so they feel more included.

We have also started working on the 2024 location planning and will tell you more about that at the Annual Meeting. Chicago is always a great location and we are beginning to evaluate hotels.

I look forward to seeing everyone in April in sunny California!

The Council of State Neurosurgical Societies (CSNS)

By Todd Barnes, CSNS Liaison

The Council of State Neurosurgical Societies (CSNS) will hold its one-of-two annual meetings on the front-end of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons in Los Angeles at the JW Marriott at L.A. Live, April 20-21, 2023. Our other annual meeting will be occurring just prior to the Congress of Neurologic Surgeons in the Fall. Along with these two events, there are various meetings within CSNS, including the Quadrant Meetings that align with our membership regions: North/Midwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast. There are also various committee meetings that happen along with the plenary session, where various presentations are made: the President of the hosting society addresses the attendees and resolutions are presented and debated.

It is heartening to see the Resident Fellows that are an integral part of the CSNS taking a broader interest in the field outside of the learning of the operative skills of their chosen profession. Many of the future leaders of both the AANS and the CNS started their leadership journey as Resident Fellows, and several of the more recent presidents of neurosurgery’s societies are past presidents of the CSNS. The CSNS is a great incubator for learning about issues outside the direct practice of medicine and NERVES is a valued resource and partner in helping the CSNS move forward.
