NERVES Socio-Economic Survey Update
Fall 2011
Valued Neurosurgery Leader,
As a service to our members, the NERVES Board of Directors is providing you some valuable information concerning the Annual Socio-Economic Survey that is conducted by NERVES.
Several years ago, the leadership of NERVES determined that it would be a worthwhile exercise to secure relevant financial information from the membership of the organization. Significant effort was, and continues to be, expended to be sure that the data that is requested has particular relevance to the practice of Neurosurgery. Your Survey Committee recommends changes to the survey instrument each year to insure that the data being surveyed will provide timely and relevant information.
Since the commencement of the survey, NERVES has utilized the services of an independent third party to administer the survey and to collect the data received. The independent third party has been utilized so as to insure compliance with the Statements of Antitrust Enforcement Policy in Health Care Enforcement Policy on Provider Participation in Exchanges of Price and Cost Information which have been issued by the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission. All guidelines concerning the dissemination of statistical data as set forth in the Statements are strictly observed.
Since all currently available data contained in all such surveys administered around the country are conducted on a voluntary submittal basis, there is no way to insure statistical validity of any of the survey data, nor is there any way for survey results to be ‘certified’. Therefore, the amount of the collected survey data becomes critical in assuring appropriate representation of voluntarily submitted data.
NERVES continues to pride itself on volume of information accumulated within its survey. Currently, no other survey, to our knowledge, contains data submitted from more neurosurgeons than the NERVES survey. Our objective is to continue to be sure our survey contains the greatest response rate of any similarly disseminated data. To that end, we encourage your participation in the survey, as higher rates of participation allow us to present data in ways that will be more beneficial to our membership.
Respectfully,

Scott Butler

NERVES Socio-Economic Survey
The purpose of the NERVES socio-economic survey is to provide general benchmarking data to neurosurgery practices. Historically, surveys prepared by other national organizations have not resulted in relevant benchmarking statistics for neurosurgery practices. Our goal is to provide useful data regarding total practice statistics as well as provider production, compensations, operating costs, and support staff specific to neurosurgery practices and related specialties.
Methodology
The NERVES socio-economic survey was developed by members of the NERVES board and the healthcare consulting and accounting firm of Heaton & Eadie located in Indianapolis, Indiana. The survey is conducted each year and results are based upon completed questionnaires received from neurosurgery practices from around the nation.
